13-05-2011 Movie Night

Me, Josh, Niamh, John, and Luis organized a movie night for the primary school in order to raise money for educations towards kids living in the slums. We were supossed to organize and raise money for the children individually, but we got together and started working as a group. Time wise, we were about three weeks behind, and we needed a way to raise money fast. We ran around talking to different priniciples, supervisors and other teachers to think of ideas in which we can raise the money. We talked as a group and came up with the idea of organizing a movie night. We know that the primary kids all enjoy movies and so, we found that the most effective way to raise a lot of money in a short amount of time. Me and Niamh went around to every grade and had a vote of three films to determine which was the best to show
the movies were
-Cats and dogs II
-Despicable me
-Megamind

Cats and dogs was the most voted movie amongst all grades, so that was the one chosen to be shown. The movie would take place on Friday the 13th of May 2011. We planned to have the grades gather in the cafeteria, eat their paid for popcorn and juicebox and then bring them to the PMPR afterwards. No food is allowed in the Primary Multi Purpose Room, which is why we decided to let them finish in the cafeteria first. Each of the kids paid 200 rupees for the movie, one popcorn and one juicebox.
The total amount of money we raised was about 20,000 rupees.

CAS 06-06-2011

During the second semester I joined the Temple School community service program. Like last year, the puropse of this service program is to entertain preschoolers coming in from a local school. Each week a different pair of people organize an activity for that school. We have to organize something creative and try to make it edducational. The kids come every thursday for one hour where 15 minutes of that is drinking milk and having a snack. The actvities that I had helped organize consitsted of finger painting, and musical activities. The cas students really enjoyed the musical activities. First we got them to stand up, and dance around according to the music. Then we played the game musical chairs, which they enjoyed quite alot.
There were some instances where i was not able to do the cas because of other school work, there were also instances where the local school did not come due to new years and vesak celebrations, or any other local holiday.
I enjoyed doing this service program this year aswell as last and will probably also take part in it next year.

CAS Temple school 19-03-10

I started the CAS temple school. In temple school we have to think of and organize activities to do for a group of preschoolers from a local preschool. They don't know a lot of english, but we still interact with them normally. When they came for the first time we oraganized picture frame painting for them. We gave them each a frame, and a few colors ofpaint then we got together with one of them and helped them paint it, we had a lot of fun. Then we took pictures of them and got them laminated to put into the frames. so next time that they come, they can take them home. I think they also enjoyed painting the frames and each of them were very creative.
Next time they come we are going to do something fun with clay. There were about 16 of them and they were all very cute.

Haiti car wash-Feb 7, 2010

We organized a carwash today to raise money for Haiti. the class was split into two different groups, one of them stayed here at OSC and the other group went to the IWMI. At the IWMI we washed loads of cars, we worked together to make it work, and everytime we felt like stopping, our teacher reminded us of how much Haiti needs the help and we got back to the washing. We had a lot of fun doing it too!

RCCI kids- ZOO feb 8,2010

We took the RCCI (rehabilitation center for the communication impaired) kids to the zoo today, we got paired up with one or two of them and we were supossed to show them around and communicate with them. It was hard for some people because some of the kids cannot speak or hear at all, but after you spend some time with them and talked to them and got to know more about them. Most of them were scared and nervous but they got used to us after a while, they are very nice kids and are great in their own way. I learned so much about my partner even though she could only say a few words, We had loads of fun and enjoyed working and being with them.

2009 blood drive

In 2009, AISK in Kingston, Jamaica It started at the end of January, there was a girl named Jessica, she got in a tragic car accident where he sadly broke her rib, pelvis, and ankle, not only that but one of her lungs were leaking, she lost 80% of her blood and wasn't going to make it. But when Jessica needed help, the AISK family answered her call, we had a blood drive, where people could donate blood to her, highschoolers, parents, even people from other schools came to donate some blood. she had multiple opertions and had to stay in the hospital for a long time.
She was unconscious in the hospital not only on valentines day, but also on her birthday.
She missed half of the school year and was missed by lots of her friends, everybody had their hopes up that Jessica would return to us once again.
We had a bakesale and raised even more money for her.
I went to visit her in her house and brought sometimes brought her schoolwork and helped her learn math. Once she got out of the hospital, she wasnt able to walk, and had to learn all over again.
It was heartbreaking hearing this story over and over again. But now I'm just happy that Jessica is safe and healthy.
